Epic HST Technique

This is a great technique that saves time (less trimming time) and money (not having to buy additional rulers)!

April 12, 2014

We had a beautiful Saturday in the 70's that made it hard to be inside sewing, but a few of us toughed it out and worked on our projects. I was late coming to the workshop, as I walked my 3.1 miles in the American Heart Association Heart Walk. This was tough for me, as it was the first big walk I have done since I developed stress fractures in my right heel in October of 2013. Foot was sore afterwards, but feeling better by the day.

Today was the final day to sign up for the Scrappy Stitchers Block Exchange. We were up to 20 participants, but two have had to drop out and now we are at the final count of 18 and if life gets in the way and you can't make your block, let us know. We know we don't always have control over the things that happen in life. The block chosen for this exchange was the Churn Dash found here: http://www.quilterscache.com/C/ChurnDashBlock.html
The blocks are to be made using a neutral background and spring/summer colors for the rest. Unfinished they should measure 12 1/2" so when they are finished in the quilt top they will measure 12". The blocks are due for exchange at our June 14 workshop. Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Andrea showed off the body of her caterpillar quilt she is putting together. The embroidery work she did on the circles added a nice pop to the quilt.

Andrea created this paper pieced block for an upcoming challenge call Round Robin taking place in the Stitchin Time Quilt Club.

Nancy made this table topper called Friendship Star. Love the purples in this, but then again that is my favorite color!

Nancy made this Fat Quarter Fun Modern Baby Quilt. My picture doesn't do the colors justice.

Susan was working on her Churn Dash Blocks for  our quilt block exchange. Love the colors.

Tammy who is new to our group made this beautiful quilt called Meadows in Bloom.

Tammy also created this modified French Braid. Another beautiful quilt she shared with us.
She spent the day working on a double nine patch pattern called Butter Scotch Pudding which can be found in the March/April 2014 Fons & Porter Love of Quilting magazine.

I chose to work on my quilt blocks that require embroidery work. My Grandma L. was my teacher for embroidery. Grandma did wonderful work and I inherited some of her enjoyment of this craft. I have blocks from her that she made for me before she passed that I plan to make into quilts to pass down through the family. These make wonderful carry along work when I am traveling.

Julie brought a nice selction of batiks with her today and spent her time cutting out pieces for three different baby quilts! Now all she has to do is the assembly as time permits.

Diane came and then had to leave, as her sewing machine decided to stop working. That is always a hardhsip when your favorite machine isn't functioning. She was missed.

Laurie stopped by and worked with Andrea on the rules for the upcoming block challenge called Round Robin for the Stitchin Time Quilt Club. It involves a block and borders and that is all I know for now.

Happy stitching everyone! See you in May!

Even with a some of our quilters spending the weekend at a quilt retreat, we were able to put in a productive day. Even had a new face in the crowd. The sewing machines were humming and the conversations were flowing with lots of laughter. Always love the moments spent with fellow quilters and enjoying a shared passion for the cotton fibers.

Brenda (new face in the crowd) showing off her completed quilt top for a baby quilt she was working on.

Brenda also showed off the awesome way she was learning all of the decorative stitches on her new sewing machine. A fun apron when she is all done.

Joann had a wonderful tool caddy by her machine that she made and we were all admiring it. Silly me oohh and aahhed over it and forgot to take a picture of it to share. lol!

Frossie completed two more of these cute little duffle bags for presents she is making ahead. These are the same fabric using both sides. She also worked on her Churn Dash blocks for the block exchange. Here is a link to the block pattern we are using for the block exchange:  http://www.quilterscache.com/C/ChurnDashBlock.html

Andrea worked on parts of her caterpillar quilt she is making for an upcoming baby. She embroideried the center circle on each of these flannel circles that she cut out to give it a little more pizzazz!

Vicky worked on these wonderful no sew blankets for her family. The force is always with her!! lol!

I worked on my blocks for the Aurifil Block of the Month through Pat Sloan. Here is her facebook quilting community comprised of quilters from all over the world sharing all kinds of wonderful projects, ideas and fellowship: https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/groups/QuiltWithPatSloan/

In closing: Live life like you will never run out of fabric!!

Your scrappy stitcher in heart,
